Yesterday was the first day of school here in Philly. It was also 95 degrees. Heatwave notwithstanding, I’m in the back to school spirit and wanted to send a quick missive to let my dear readers (you!) know that I’ll be teaching a class with Blue Stoop this fall, and you can join me!
This is actually my third year teaching this Foundations of Journalistic Writing course, and it’s always a good time. We cover everything from straight news to narrative features, and read many excellent models by writers like Rachel Aviv, Pamela Colloff, Hannah Dreier, Mitchell S. Jackson, and Rachel Kaadzi Ghansah. Students learn how find and pitch stories, interview subjects, and report and research, and in the process workshop a draft of a short news story and a feature.
This eight-week class meets over Zoom on Tuesdays from 6:00 to 8:00 PM EST, starting September 26. Registration is rolling from now until September 19; no applications needed! You can sign up here. And if you’re in the Greater Philadelphia area, you can apply for financial aid in the same place.
